The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) Undertaking has formed an inquiry committee after a wet-lease bus allegedly hit a tempo worker at PMGP Colony on Wednesday, leading to his death during treatment.
The accident occurred at around 10.15 am when BEST bus No. 8050, operating on route 441 from Majas Depot towards Andheri, hit the door of a poultry transport tempo parked on the left side of the road, according to the undertaking.
The tempo worker had reportedly opened the vehicle's door when the bus was passing alongside it. The impact threw him against the tempo before he fell onto the road. He was rushed to hospital, where he died during treatment.
The bus was operated by Mateshwari Urban Transport Solution Pvt Ltd, a wet-lease operator for BEST, and was attached to Majas Depot. The incident was registered at MIDC Police Station in Andheri East. A case has been registered against the bus driver, and further investigation is underway.
BEST has also appointed a committee to provide immediate assistance to the deceased's family.
In a statement issued on Thursday, BEST outlined several measures adopted to prevent accidents involving its own buses and those operated by wet-lease contractors.
Since September 28, a one-day refresher training programme for wet-lease bus drivers has been conducted through Hino Motors. A total of 753 drivers have undergone the training so far, according to the undertaking.
BEST has also started a three-day, depot-wise training programme for its own and wet-lease bus drivers through its Transport Training Centre in Dindoshi. Under this initiative, 5,314 drivers have been trained.
In addition, around 500 BEST drivers have received driving simulator training through the Western India Automobile Association (WIAA). The association's director, Nitin Dhoza, has indicated that similar training will be extended to wet-lease drivers in the future.
The BEST administration has directed transport officers and supervisory staff deployed along bus routes to take immediate action against drivers found behaving rudely with passengers, driving recklessly or violating traffic rules.
The undertaking said it remained committed to providing safe, reliable and passenger-friendly bus services.
