BMC has come up with guidelines for cleaning water tanks in private societies to reduce the risk of any contamination. In 2012-13, almost 17 per cent of water samples were found unsafe for drinking.

The BMC improved the system and in 2018-19 unsafe water samples came down to 0.70 per cent. As per guidelines, tanks should be cleaned twice a year by contractors registered with the corporation.

Moss and other garbage should be removed using chlorine and a high-pressure jet. If there is no outlet to use a suction pump, use ISO/FDA authorised chlorine powder to disinfect the tank. Users should send a sample of water from a clean tank for testing at a corporation lab situated at Dadar.
