Over 1.5 years after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reopened Byculla's Dr Bhau Daji Lad museum following a two-year restoration project at Mumbai's oldest such facility, it has decided to outsource its surveillance and security.
This will include round-the-clock monitoring of display items, daily patrols for suspicious activity or security breaches, and prevention of unauthorised access, theft, and trespassing. No incidents have been reported so far, and security is being beefed up preemptively.
At present, the museum, which was opened to the public in 1857, is monitored by the BMC's in-house security, including guards and staff in charge of managing the Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Botanical Udyan and Zoo in whose vicinity the facility stands.
Dr Sanjay Tripathi, director of the zoo, said, "After the reopening of the museum, we have seen a high footfall. At present, we internally manage the security. The security is there. But we want to streamline it, and we will hire a new agency."
1 Deployment of trained personnel for round-the-clock surveillance of the museum premises, building, galleries, entry/exit gates and other designated locations
2 Visitor guidance, crowd management, queue regulation, and assistance during normal operations and special events
3 Preventing unauthorised access, theft, trespassing, and damage to museum property, exhibits, and assets
4 Conducting regular patrols and reporting any suspicious activities, security breaches, or untoward incidents to the designated authority
5 Monitoring CCTV systems, access control systems, alarm systems, and other surveillance equipment
6 Assisting in fire safety, emergency response, evacuation procedures, and disaster management in coordination with the museum authority
7 Maintaining occurrence registers, visitor records, and incident reports
