Chavan's misdeeds were brought to light by Yogiraj Deshmukh, the area ward president of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). Deshmukh has been fighting over an issue with a local builder, in which Chavan had intervened.

The inspector called Deshmukh to his police station and asked him to stop acting against the builder. Chavan threatened him, saying that if he didn't take a step back, he would file a false case of extortion against him and extern him from the area.

The cop then demanded money an amount of Rs 15,000 from Deshmukh. Following this, Deshmukh went straight to the ACB office and registered a complaint. Accordingly, the ACB officials laid a trap to nab Chavan.

Around 11 am yesterday, Deshmukh went to Chavan's cabin, where he was sitting along with one Hasan Ramchandani, who had acted as middleman between the cop and the complainant.

When Deshmukh gave Chavan a wad of notes, which had been marked by the ACB, to bait him, the anti-graft officials entered the cabin and caught the cop red-handed with the cash. Chavan will be produced in court today.
