Maharashtra government on Wednesday appealed to all state government officers and employees to actively participate in the âSelf-Enumeration' process under the upcoming Census 2027 initiative.
As per the official statement, the appeal comes as part of preparations for the nationwide census exercise being conducted by the Government of India. The officials also asserted that the census 2027 will be carried out in two phases. The first phase will include house listing and a housing census, while the second phase will focus on population enumeration.
In Maharashtra, the first phase is scheduled between May 16 and June 14, 2026. Ahead of this, citizens have been given the option to complete âSelf-Enumeration' from May 1 to May 15, 2026, through an online portal.
Officials further highlighted that the move aligns with the Centre's Digital India initiative, which promotes the use of technology in governance. Moreover, the self-enumeration facility allows citizens to submit their own details digitally via the official census portal, improving the accuracy, efficiency, and timeliness of data collection.
The General Administration department further emphasised that participation from government employees would play a crucial role in setting an example for the wider public and ensuring the success of the exercise.
Officials also noted that Maharashtra has consistently been at the forefront of implementing central initiatives and aims to maintain that position through active involvement in the digital census process.
Furthermore, the concerned department has urged all government personnel to take part in the process and contribute to the smooth and effective conduct of Census 2027.
Ahead of the census, citizens of Maharashtra will also be able to initiate the digital self-enumeration process for the Census 2027 on the HLO mobile application until May 14. This is part of Phase I (Houselisting) of the census. It is optional for citizens to download the mobile application and declare their assets and amenities as part of this phase.
Starting May 15, government-appointed teachers will begin to visit homes to verify information that is digitally disclaimed by citizens. The door-to-door exercise will conclude on June 14.
