Padma Shri Dr Dnyandev Yashwantrao (D Y) Patil, the founder of the D Y Patil Group of educational institutions, former Governor and veteran public leader, passed away at the age of 92 following a prolonged illness at his residence in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, on Tuesday.

His passing has drawn condolences from political leaders, academicians and members of the education fraternity across the country.

Dr Patil is survived by his sons, former Maharashtra minister and Congress leader Satej Patil, Sanjay Patil and Ajinkya Patil.

Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Ajit Pawar expressed deep sorrow over the demise of Dr Patil, describing him as an inspiring personality whose lifelong commitment to education and social service transformed countless lives.

In her condolence message, she said Dr Patil firmly believed that education was one of the strongest instruments for social transformation.

By establishing hundreds of educational institutions, universities and colleges offering medical, engineering and higher education across the country, he created opportunities for lakhs of students and helped shape the future of generations.

She said his contribution to education, healthcare, sports and social welfare would continue to be remembered for years to come.

A lifetime dedicated to education

Hailing from Kolhapur, Dr Patil began his political career as a legislator, serving as an MLA between 1967 and 1978. Later, he shifted his focus towards building educational institutions, laying the foundation of what would become one of India's most prominent education groups.

The D Y Patil Group today runs universities, medical colleges, engineering institutions, management schools and several other educational establishments across the country, making quality higher education accessible to thousands of students every year.

His contribution to education earned him the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian honours.

Apart from his work in education, Dr Patil also served in several constitutional positions. He was appointed Governor of Tripura before later serving as the Governor of Bihar. He also held the additional charge of Governor of West Bengal during his distinguished public career.

Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Ajit Pawar said Dr Patil discharged his constitutional responsibilities with integrity while upholding democratic values. She noted that throughout his public life, he remained known for his simplicity, foresight and unwavering commitment to public welfare.

An irreparable loss

Calling his demise an irreparable loss, Sunetra Pawar said the nation had lost a visionary educationist, social worker and experienced public leader whose work would continue to inspire future generations.

She extended her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for eternal peace for Dr Patil's soul while wishing strength to his family to bear the loss.

With institutions spread across multiple states and a legacy built on expanding access to higher education, Dr D Y Patil leaves behind an enduring contribution that will continue to influence India's educational landscape for decades to come.
