Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Saturday criticised the Centre over the detention of protesters during a demonstration against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in Delhi, saying the regime lacked "the guts to call this an Emergency", reported the PTI.
The national capital witnessed heightened security as Delhi Police detained nearly 500 protesters attempting to reach Jantar Mantar for a proposed demonstration by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).
In a post on X, Thackeray shared a photograph of Trinamool Congress leaders, including former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, being taken away in a police vehicle.
"The regime still doesn't have the guts to call this an Emergency," Aaditya Thackeray wrote.
CJP leader Abhijeet Dipke and two other party leaders, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, were detained inside an aircraft after their flight from Mumbai landed in Delhi, according to the information provided.
YouTuber Dhruv Rathee was also named among those detained amid the police action against protesters.
Police detained people at several locations across the national capital as they attempted to reach the protest site. Security personnel were deployed at key intersections and approach roads, while authorities monitored movement in the area.
The CJP had called the demonstration against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations of voter-list manipulation during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and changes relating to Form 6, which is used for voter registration.
Delhi Police had denied permission for the proposed demonstration at Jantar Mantar, citing security considerations and procedural requirements.
Meanwhile, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP SP) MP Supriya Sule on Saturday slammed the crackdown on people heading to Delhi for a peaceful agitation, calling the government's action "cowardly" and demanding comprehensive electoral reforms to ensure free and fair polls, reported the PTI.
Speaking at a news channel's conclave, Sule asserted that the government should have held a dialogue with protestors staging a demonstration against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar rather than imposing restrictions.
"I condemn this act because it was a very peaceful agitation. They were going to participate in Delhi, and I personally feel, it is a strong word, but it is cowardly of any government to do that," she said, according to the PTI.
