MID DAY IMPACT » Bullying staff can’t make patients waiting to exchange notes suffer

After mid-day's report about staff at the city's biggest civic-run hospital KEM getting abusive with patients' families standing in line to exchange old notes, the hospital has remedied the situation with a separate queue for the staff.

Last week, the hospital had set up two counters, one by India Post and the other by Punjab National Bank, at the hospital for patients and staffers to exchange their old high denomination notes. But, hospital staffers had started misusing it, breaking the queues to be served first. A video grab showed how a staffer from the hospital abused a patient protesting against the bullying. Following the story, the staffer was summoned by the dean and a separate queue was set up for hospital staffers and doctors the very next day.

"We have started two separate lines. Now doctors and other staffers will have to stand in a queue to exchange their old currency. They won't be able to misuse the facility," said Dr Avinash Supe, dean of KEM Hospital. Also, a long-defunct SBIâu00c2u0080u00c2u0088ATM machine at the hospital has been activated. "Just for the patients, we requested the bank to activate the ATM. Now, patients and relatives who have cards can directly withdraw money from inside the hospital," said Dr Supe.
