NCP (SP) leaders protest fuel price hike; Rohit Pawar targets govt over farm loan waiver

Meanwhile, NCP (SP) leaders on Wednesday staged a protest against the recent increases in fuel prices, with its MLA Rohit Pawar also targeting the Maharashtra government over the "conditions" in its farm loan waiver scheme.

Talking to reporters after the protest at the CIDCO Exhibition Centre in Navi Mumbai, the party's state president Shashikant Shinde alleged that the government was burdening citizens despite increased revenue collections.

"The government appears more concerned about elections while common people are suffering," Shinde said.

He claimed that India's international relations had weakened, which was "affecting" both fuel supplies and export opportunities for farmers. He also accused the police of attempting to curb their democratic protest through force, saying notices had been served to activists and roads blocked to prevent participation in the agitation.

The Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi bloc, comprising NCP (SP), the Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT), could launch a larger protest, including a demonstration at state secretariat Mantralaya, if the government failed to address public grievances, he said.

NCP (SP) general secretary and MLA Rohit Pawar, who took part in the protest, criticised the state government's farm loan waiver scheme, alleging that the "conditions" attached to it would leave a majority of farmers without meaningful relief.

The Maharashtra cabinet on Tuesday approved a Rs 36,585 crore farm loan waiver scheme which is expected to benefit nearly 56 lakh cultivators, fulfilling a major pre-poll promise made by the ruling Mahayuti alliance in 2024.

Pawar claimed that those with outstanding dues exceeding Rs 50,000 would first have to clear the excess amount before becoming eligible for the benefit.

"With the average crop loan in the state being around Rs 1 lakh, a farmer with an overdue loan of Rs 1 lakh will have to first repay Rs 50,000 and only then receive the waiver. This is not a loan waiver scheme but a loan recovery scheme," he alleged.

The Karjat-Jamkhed MLA said previous governments had announced blanket loan waivers in 2008 and 2019 without imposing such conditions and urged the state government to remove all restrictions attached to the present scheme.

He warned that the party would launch protests if the government failed to revise the scheme.

The legislator also said that the government should take immediate steps to address inflation and unemployment, warning that public discontent could intensify if the issues remained unresolved.
