Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar expressed grief over the deaths of eight students from Alandi who drowned at Diveagar beach in Raigad district on Thursday. The students were on a trip organised by Winners Academy, a private coaching institute in Alandi.
Fadnavis described the incident as extremely sad and painful and offered his condolences to the families of the deceased students.
He said all eight students were from Alandi and that the local administration was coordinating arrangements to take their mortal remains to Alandi.
Around 30 to 40 Class 11 and 12 Science students had travelled to Diveagar for a trip. Eight students reportedly drowned after being unable to judge the depth of the water.
All eight bodies have been recovered and further procedures are underway.
The deceased have been identified as Yash Kiran Wankhede, Soham Tukaram Bhandwalkar, Tanmay Dattatray Vahile, Kaustubh Sandeep Daund, Kaivalya Vasankar, Rajveer Vahile, Pranav Bansode and Sumit Ahire, officials said.
Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar said she spoke to the Raigad district collector, superintendent of police and Pune district collector after receiving information about the incident.
In a post on X, she said she directed the administration to take immediate steps for rescue and relief work and other necessary procedures. Police, revenue and health department officials were present at the site.
Pawar expressed her condolences to the families of the students and said she shared their grief.
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also expressed grief over the tragedy, describing the deaths as extremely unfortunate.
In his post on X, Shinde offered tributes to the eight students and said that he and others stood with their families in their grief.
The students from Classes 11 and 12 had travelled from Alandi to Diveagar as part of an educational trip. Preliminary information indicated that the students entered the sea and were swept into deeper water after apparently misjudging the water conditions. All eight bodies were subsequently recovered.
Police and local authorities are carrying out further legal and administrative procedures and investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
