Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Thursday reaffirmed his longstanding association with the Kutchi community while reiterating the Maharashtra government's commitment to the overall development of Thane. He was speaking at the annual 'Kutchi Pagdi Konshire' felicitation programme organised by Kutchi Asmita Manch, where distinguished members of the community were honoured for their contributions in various fields.
The annual event, now in its 19th year, recognises individuals for their service and achievements across different sectors. Addressing the gathering, Shinde said he has attended the programme every year and considers it more than a formal public event.
"I attend this programme every year with the same feeling as attending a family function, irrespective of the circumstances. The Kutchi community honours people who have excelled in various fields by presenting them with a traditional pagdi (turban). Such recognition inspires others to contribute more to society and promotes the overall development of the community," Shinde said.
During his address, Shinde also expressed grief over the recent death of a 40-year-old award recipient who died following a heart attack and paid tribute to him.
Shinde praised Kutchi Asmita Manch president Suresh Gada for his contribution to social work and his long association with Shiv Sena.
"Suresh Gada has been dedicated to social service for many years. If anyone can truly be called a loyal Shiv Sainik of Dharmaveer Anand Dighe, it is Suresh Gada," he said.
Greeting members of the community on the occasion of Ashadhi Beej, which marks the Kutchi New Year, Shinde noted that the festival holds special significance for the community and marks the beginning of a new year.
He also recalled the work of the late Shiv Sena leader Dharmaveer Anand Dighe, saying he had always believed that traders and business owners in Thane should not face unnecessary difficulties. According to Shinde, efforts to ensure a safe business environment have continued over the years, contributing to the city's commercial and industrial growth.
Highlighting ongoing development works in Thane, Shinde said several major infrastructure projects are currently underway, including road upgrades, Metro projects, an internal Metro network, a Coastal Road and double-decker roads.
He said traffic from the Ahmedabad-Ghodbunder corridor is expected to be diverted directly towards Mumbai through the proposed Coastal Road in the future, a move that would help reduce congestion within Thane.
Shinde also referred to the city's expanding healthcare infrastructure, stating that work on a new cancer hospital would begin soon. He acknowledged the contribution of healthcare institutions, including Mahavir Hospital, and several social organisations for strengthening medical services in the city.
Recalling the COVID-19 pandemic, Shinde said a COVID care centre had been established with community support without spending funds from the Thane Municipal Corporation. He said the initiative reflected the spirit of cooperation among citizens during a challenging period.
Speaking about the city's changing landscape, Shinde said Thane has developed into a hub for entrepreneurs, traders, professionals, artists and people from diverse communities, supported by expanding infrastructure.
"A trader can grow only when he feels safe and secure. The business community has played a significant role in Thane's development, and it is my responsibility to ensure their safety and provide them with the necessary facilities," he said.
Reflecting on his political journey, Shinde said the people of Thane had supported him throughout his career.
"The people of Thane have supported me from my days as a branch chief to becoming Chief Minister and now Deputy Chief Minister. Our relationship is not merely political but one of family and affection," he said.
Shinde reiterated that the state government remains committed to improving public infrastructure, expanding healthcare facilities and providing better civic amenities for all sections of society. He said programmes that recognise individuals for their contribution to society encourage greater public participation in social service.
