In a separate incident in August, Mumbai Police maintained a heavy security deployment across the city through the night of August 26 and into the morning of August 27 after brief tension erupted in the Lalbaug - Parel area during a religious procession.
Senior police officers and additional personnel were deployed at sensitive locations as a precaution, while police teams remained on the ground throughout the night. The situation was brought under control soon after the incident, and no further major untoward incident was reported.
According to preliminary information, tension broke out in Parel on Wednesday night following an Eid procession.
An alleged exchange of slogans between two groups reportedly led to an argument, which later escalated near the Laxmi Cottage area, where stone-pelting was also reported.
Police personnel intervened immediately and brought the situation under control. Mild force was reportedly used to disperse those involved.
The exact sequence of events and the trigger behind the confrontation are still being investigated.
Senior Mumbai Police officers and additional personnel rushed to the spot following the incident. Reinforcements were deployed in the area as a precaution to prevent the situation from escalating.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Manoj Sharma appealed to citizens not to believe rumours and said the situation was calm, with senior officers present at the spot.
Police said there was no reason for panic and maintained that the additional deployment was a precautionary measure to ensure peace and maintain law and order.
