Football fraternity opposes playground redevelopment, Aaditya Thackeray backs open space

Young footballers take part in a protest at Neville D’Souza Ground in Bandra, opposing the proposed takeover of the venue

Footballers, coaches, parents and enthusiasts said the city cannot afford to lose another open space, arguing that alternative plots are available for the project.

Mumbai Football Association (MFA) president Aaditya Thackeray said the move sends the wrong message to young footballers and questioned why a playground was being sacrificed for a concrete structure.

MFA secretary Sudhakar Rane said the turnout reflected the commitment of the city's young footballers, many of whom attended the protest despite staying up to watch the World Cup.

One of Mumbai's few dedicated football grounds could be lost.
