Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde has announced that around 2,900 Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (ST) buses have been arranged to help Ganesh devotees travel to their hometowns in Konkan and western Maharashtra for Ganeshotsav 2026, an official statement, issued by Shinde's office, said on Sunday.

Shinde was speaking at an event in Thane to launch the distribution of tickets for the free bus service organised by the Shiv Sena.

Shinde said the initiative aims to make the journey of devotees safe, comfortable and convenient, particularly for those who may not be able to secure train or other transport tickets during the festival season.

He said the free bus service has been introduced as part of the party's social commitment and would be continued every year.

Shinde said Ganeshotsav was not only a religious celebration but also an important tradition that brings society together and helps preserve Maharashtra's culture.

He recalled the role of Lokmanya Tilak in using public celebrations of Ganeshotsav 2026 and Shiv Jayanti to unite people during the freedom movement.

He also highlighted the tradition of public Ganesh mandals organising social awareness campaigns, themed displays and community initiatives.

Referring to the late Anand Dighe, Shinde said the tradition of Ganeshotsav competitions in Thane had helped add a social awareness element to the festival.

"Festivals and traditions should be celebrated on a larger scale and passed on to the next generation," he said.

Focus on travellers heading to Konkan

A large number of people from Konkan and western Maharashtra traditionally return to their native villages for Ganeshotsav.

Shinde said transport becomes a major challenge during the festival, as not everyone can get a railway or other travel ticket.

He said the free bus initiative was being carried out in keeping with the Shiv Sena's emphasis on social work and the principle of putting social service before politics.

During his speech, Shinde also referred to various initiatives undertaken during his tenure as Maharashtra Chief Minister.

He highlighted schemes and measures including a 50 per cent concession on ST travel for women, free higher education for girls, skill development and start-up support, as well as pilgrimage facilities for senior citizens.

He also mentioned the decision allowing women to use their mother's name alongside their own name in official records.

Appeal for safe celebrations

Shinde urged Lord Ganesh devotees travelling to their hometowns to make use of the arrangements and celebrate the festival safely and enthusiastically.

He also thanked those involved in organising the free bus service and extended his wishes to devotees ahead of Ganeshotsav.
