A total of 44,261 idols of Lord Ganesh and Goddess Gauri were immersed at various locations across Mumbai by 6 am on Sunday, the sixth day of the 12-day Ganeshotsav, civic officials said.
No untoward incident was reported during the immersion processions, officials added.
According to figures released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the latest immersion count included 38,438 household Lord Ganesh idols and 5,518 Goddess Gauri idols. A total of 305 idols belonging to public Ganesh mandals were also immersed during the period.
Household idols accounted for the largest share of the immersions recorded during the sixth-day period. The BMC said 38,438 household Ganesh idols had been immersed by 6 am on Sunday.
The figures also included 5,518 idols of Goddess Gauri, which are traditionally immersed during the festival, along with 305 idols of public Ganesh mandals.
The total number of immersions recorded during the period stood at 44,261.
Ganesh idols are immersed on different days depending on family and community traditions. In Mumbai, immersions take place on the one-and-a-half-day, third, fifth, sixth and seventh days, as well as on Anant Chaturdashi, which marks the conclusion of the festival.
The different immersion schedules spread the movement of devotees and processions across several days instead of concentrating all immersions on the final day.
On the fifth day of Ganeshotsav, which began on Friday and continued until 6 am on Saturday, a total of 37,843 idols were immersed, according to civic officials.
The fifth-day figure included 35,843 household Ganesh idols, 1,030 public Ganesh mandal idols and 129 idols of Goddess Hartalika.
The numbers reflect the large participation of households and public groups in the festival, with devotees following different immersion traditions.
During the one-and-a-half-day immersion period on September 15 and 16, a total of 61,640 Ganesh idols were immersed across Mumbai, according to the figures provided by civic officials.
The total included 301 idols of public Ganesh mandals, 61,247 household idols and 92 Hartalika idols.
The one-and-a-half-day immersion was the first major immersion period of this year's festival and saw large numbers of devotees take part in processions across the city.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has made arrangements at designated immersion sites across Mumbai, including artificial ponds, to facilitate devotees and manage the movement of processions.
Civic officials said no untoward incident was reported during the sixth-day immersions covered by the latest update.
Ganeshotsav began on September 14 and will culminate on Anant Chaturdashi on September 25. Large numbers of devotees and public mandals are expected to participate in immersion processions on the concluding day, when idols will be immersed at designated water bodies and other facilities across Mumbai.
