The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has accelerated the construction of 906 rehabilitation flats in Kanjurmarg West for residents affected by the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road Project.

A modern residential building for affected citizens is being built in Kanjur West area. It will rehabilitate families affected by the GMLR project, officials said.

The housing project is part of the civic body's initiative to provide safe and dignified accommodation for citizens whose homes are impacted by the major road infrastructure development, an official statement said.

According to officials, around 906 flats are being built across seven buildings on a plot measuring about 10,050 square metres. Each building will have a structure of ground floor plus 23 floors.

Every apartment will have an area of about 300 square feet and will include a living room, bedroom with an attached bathroom and a kitchen.

The housing complex will also provide facilities such as a market area, community hall, library, health centre and a sewage treatment plant for the residents.

Inspection by top official

Abhijit Bangar, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) of the BMC, visited the site on 6 March to review the progress of construction.

During the inspection, he examined the quality of work including internal structure, water supply systems, sanitation facilities, electricity connections, lifts, staircases and fire safety arrangements.

Bangar directed officials to ensure that the construction is completed within the stipulated time so that the flats can be handed over to project-affected families as soon as possible.

First Phase Rehabilitation by March

Officials said that construction of two buildings is in the final stage and rehabilitation of around 252 affected residents is expected to be completed by the end of March 2026.

The remaining buildings are expected to receive completion certificates by April 2026.

Part of major road infra project

The Goregaon-Mulund Link Road project is being developed in four phases and is aimed at improving connectivity across eastern and western suburbs of Mumbai.

Under Phase 3 of the project, excavation of underground tunnels using tunnel boring machines is expected to begin in June 2026.

Before this work starts, residents from the Amar Nagar area will be relocated to the new housing complex in Kanjurmarg West.

Focus on safe housing

The BMC stated that the rehabilitation initiative aims to provide affected citizens with secure housing along with essential civic infrastructure such as internal roads, open spaces and community facilities. The civic officials have been instructed to ensure that all amenities are completed on time so that residents can move into the new homes without delay.
