Hacked body found in Chembur lake: Three 10-year-olds help cops make sketch of killer

The three children not only assisted the Chembur police in sketching the image of the accused who disposed a dismembered body of a woman in the Charai Lake, but also narrated the events about the night when they unknowingly helped the accused in dumping the body

The three children identified as Rohit Golap, Mukesh Kawle and Ateesh Kale gave vital information to the Chembur police investigating the murder of a woman whose dismembered body was found in the Charai Lake on Tuesday night.

The cops claimed that the trio had assisted them in completing 50 per cent of their detection work, as the three children were the ones who had helped the accused in throwing the body into the lake on Tuesday night. According to their statements, when the accused arrived in an autorickshaw, he asked them to help him, as he couldn't lift the sack containing the body alone. After they picked up the sack, they felt something warm.

"After we learnt that the sack was hot, we asked him about the contents of the sack, to which he replied that it was the leftovers from his housewarming party which he had organised at his place that day," said one of the boys in his statement. The sack was thrown into the lake but the three were very suspicious of the man. Going by their instincts, they noted down the number of the rickshaw in which the accused arrived. Later with the help of some people around, they retrieved the sack from the lake and saw a dismembered body dumped inside.

"Then at 9.30 pm, the Chembur police were informed about the remains of the body found after which we went to the spot and started interrogating. On the basis of the rickshaw number provided by the three boys, we detained the rickshaw driver the next day," said an officer from Chembur police station.

After interrogating the rickshaw driver, they learnt that the accused had hired the rickshaw from Subhash Nagar in Chembur. The next morning, the two missing legs of the woman were found in Trombay. The limbs were discovered when a part of the woman's toes were seen jutting out of the sack by a boy who then informed the police.

The cops believe that the limbs belong to the same woman but they are still awaiting confirmation as the body has been sent for DNA test in JJ Hospital. The accused has been booked under section 302 (punishment for murder), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
