The Bombay High Court yesterday set aside a 2017 government resolution that made the Mumbai District Co-operative Bank (MDCB) the official bank for disbursal of salaries to teachers in aided schools in the megapolis. A division bench of Justices BR Gavai and BP Colabawalla also came down heavily on state education minister Vinod Tawde for issuing such an "irrational" resolution.

"When you (Tawde) were in the Opposition, then you were the one who levelled allegations against this bank (MDCB). And now, suddenly, this bank has become good," the court said while hearing a petition filed by a teachers' organisation, Shikshak Bharati, challenging the resolution.

The state has already paid salaries to 15,000 out of 27,000 teachers in Mumbai. The remaining have declined to open a new account in the MDCB, insisting that the old method of salary payment through the Union Bank of India be continued. They questioned the MDCB's track record and contended that nationalised banks were safer.
