Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray has criticised restrictions on public protests in Delhi, accusing the government of imposing an "emergency without the guts to call it so" ahead of a proposed demonstration at Jantar Mantar on October 10.
In a post on X, Thackeray responded to remarks by Delhi Police Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Shrishti Pandey regarding the proposed protest organised by the CJP. He questioned the restrictions on public gatherings and alleged that the government was undermining democratic rights.
He said, "Imposing Emergency without the guts to call it so. What a shame! The world is watching India's democracy be reclaimed by the citizens, from the grips of autocratic regime that fears real democracy!"
DCP Shrishti Pandey said prohibitory orders under Section 163 were in force and that protests would not be permitted at Jantar Mantar or other locations in the national capital.
Explaining the police position, Pandey said, "Section 163 is in effect, meaning protests are not permitted, neither at Jantar Mantar nor anywhere else. Any gathering will be considered illegal, and we would be compelled to take necessary legal action against it. I would like to urge the protestors not to participate in such illegal gatherings. Please prioritise your own safety as well. Also, consider the safety of your family. Regarding protests that are illegal, there is a proper way to participate in the process. By joining an illegal protest, you could end up facing long-term legal consequences."
Delhi has been placed on high alert ahead of the proposed October 10 demonstration, with extensive security arrangements planned across the national capital, according to sources.
Around 23,000 security personnel are expected to be deployed between October 8 and 12. The Ministry of Home Affairs has also provided additional companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) to assist the Delhi Police in managing security and preventing potential disturbances.
The CJP has announced a demonstration at Jantar Mantar on October 10, with participants expected to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. However, permission for the proposed gathering has not been granted so far, sources said.
Authorities are also monitoring social media activity following calls by some groups for protests and gatherings in Delhi around October 10. Security agencies are keeping track of these developments to prevent confrontations and maintain law and order.
Uttar Pradesh and Haryana have also been alerted in view of the protest calls. In New Delhi, security arrangements are expected to include multi-layered barricades, CCTV surveillance and cameras equipped with facial recognition systems to monitor movement.
