An injured nilgai was saved in what can be termed as a timely intervention by the Shahpur Forest Department in a joint rescue operation along with Thane-based NGO Wildlife Welfare Association (WWA).
The rescue operation was carried out after the forest department received information from locals that an injured nilgai was spotted at Changyacha Pada in Shahapur.
Following primary medical intervention, the nilgai was sent to the forest department's treatment transit centre for recovery. The authorities thanked locals for their prompt reporting, which was vital to ensuring swift rescue and care for the animal.
The nilgai, also known as the blue bull, is Asia's largest antelope. Scientifically known as Boselaphus tragocamelus, the species is found across several parts of Maharashtra, including the Shahapur region.
