The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) general assembly on Wednesday was rocked by the Kalbadevi fire which left two firemen dead. This was the first assembly meeting after the incident and discussion on Saturday's incident went on for about five hours.

Leading the front against the ruling party and civic administration, leader of opposition Devendra Amberkar said, "After the infamous Lotus Park fire of Andheri which happened in July 2014 and killed one fireman, the then municipal commissioner Sitaram Kunte had announced a string of measures including mandatory fire audits."

"The buildings not conducting such audits will be prosecuted, and the fire brigade will be separated from the prevention wing. The number of fire hydrants defunct in the city will also be studied. But despite a year since then, no action has been taken," he added.

Shiv Sena corporator Raju Pednekar, Samajwadi Party corporator Ashraf Azmi and independent corporator Waqarunissa Ansari were among the several others who criticised the administration for the mishap.
