The Maharashtra government has identified five beaches across Raigad, Ratnagiri and Palghar districts for Blue Flag certification as part of its efforts to promote sustainable tourism and strengthen the state's coastal tourism sector, reported the PTI.

Officials said the initiative forms part of the government's broader strategy to develop environmentally friendly tourism destinations along the Konkan coastline.

Speaking about the initiative, Additional Chief Secretary (Tourism) Sanjay Khandare said the state is focusing on developing its coastal region through sustainable tourism projects, adventure sports activities and eco-friendly beach infrastructure, according to the PTI.

He said the government aims to enhance the appeal of Maharashtra's coastline for both domestic and international visitors.

Five beaches selected

The five beaches selected for Blue Flag certification this year are:

- Nagaon Beach, Raigad

- Shrivardhan Beach, Raigad

- Guhagar Beach, Ratnagiri

- Ladghar Beach, Ratnagiri

- Par Naka Dahanu Beach, Palghar

Officials believe the certification will help increase tourist footfall and improve the global visibility of these destinations.

What Is Blue Flag certification?

Blue Flag is an internationally recognised eco-label awarded to beaches, marinas and tourism boating facilities that meet strict standards related to cleanliness, environmental management, safety and visitor accessibility.

The certification encourages sustainable tourism while promoting environmental awareness and conservation.

Beaches seeking the award must comply with rigorous environmental, educational, safety and service-related criteria.

Khandare said the Tourism Department is currently obtaining the necessary approvals and clearances, including those from the Ministry of Environment.

The state government expects the selected beaches to receive certification within the next four to five months.

Long-term coastal development plan

Under the Viksit Maharashtra framework, the government plans to continue expanding the programme by seeking Blue Flag certification for three to four additional beaches every year.

Officials said the initiative is aimed at improving coastal infrastructure, promoting responsible tourism and strengthening Maharashtra's position as a leading beach tourism destination.

Konkan coast holds potential

Maharashtra's coastline stretches nearly 878 kilometres along the Arabian Sea, extending from Palghar district in the north to Sindhudurg in the south.

Known as the Konkan Coast, the region is famous for its scenic beaches, biodiversity, coastal villages and tourism potential.

The government hopes that international recognition through Blue Flag certification will attract more visitors while ensuring environmental sustainability and conservation.
