With temperatures rising over the past few days, the Panvel Municipal Corporation has urged residents to take precautions against heat-related illnesses, including heatstroke and dehydration.

In an advisory issued on Wednesday, the civic body appealed to citizens to avoid stepping out during peak sunlight hours, stay hydrated and take extra care of vulnerable groups, particularly young children, senior citizens and people working outdoors.

Panvel civic body issues heatwave safety guidelines

Dr Anand Gosavi, Chief Medical Officer of the Panvel Municipal Corporation, advised residents to carry water while travelling, wear light-coloured, loose-fitting cotton clothes and use hats, umbrellas or sunglasses when venturing outdoors.

"Residents should avoid going out in the scorching sun as far as possible. If stepping out is necessary, they should take adequate precautions and drink sufficient water at regular intervals to prevent dehydration," Dr Gosavi said.

The civic body also advised residents to include fruits, leafy vegetables and water-rich foods in their daily diet. It recommended avoiding excessive consumption of tea, coffee and other caffeinated beverages, along with stale and heavily fried food.

Watch out for warning signs of heatstroke

According to the advisory, symptoms of heat-related illnesses may include dizziness, nausea, vomiting, severe headache, muscle cramps, an increased heart rate and confusion. A body temperature approaching 104 degrees Fahrenheit can indicate a medical emergency.

In children, warning signs may include irritability, reduced appetite, decreased urination and dryness of the mouth and eyes.

Seek immediate medical attention in suspected heatstroke cases

The civic body has advised residents to move anyone experiencing heat-related discomfort to a shaded or cool place and use a cloth soaked in cool water to help lower their body temperature.

Water should be offered only if the person is fully conscious and able to swallow safely. Nothing should be given by mouth to an unconscious or confused person.

The advisory stresses that suspected heatstroke requires immediate medical attention and that treatment should not be delayed. Residents experiencing symptoms have been urged to visit the nearest Urban Primary Health Centre for medical evaluation.

The civic body has also recommended scheduling outdoor work during cooler hours and taking regular breaks to minimise exposure to excessive heat.
