Small commuter conveniences can make a big difference in a city like Mumbai, where thousands of passengers spend hours travelling every day and depend on their mobile phones for work, digital payments, navigation, and staying connected. Following complaints of the underground Mumbai Metro Aqua Line 3 missing out on charging points inside all its trains from the same manufacturer, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has said that all its new trains of Green Line 4 will have eight to 10 charging points in every single coach.

"Be it cycle facilities or mobile chargers. In the new Alstom trains of Green Line 4, there will be eight to 10 charging points are available in every car. MMRDA staff cares," MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee told mid-day. Alstom officials said requirements are placed by the procuring party, and the trains are made with all the amenities as per their requirements.

Most of the Metro trains in Mumbai have charging points including those on Yellow Line 2 and Red Line 7 manufactured by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) have mobile charging points inside them, but those on Aqua Line 3 by Alstom lack this important modern passenger amenity. Sources said the decision to exclude charging points from Aqua Line 3 was not an error but a conscious one, taken in the interest of passenger safety following concerns over electrical safety incidents over such points in coaches elsewhere.
The new Alstom-built trains to be supplied for Line 4, from Wadala to Kasarvadavli, will offer commuters the option of charging their phones during their journey. The trains will also have bicycle racks, confirmed officials.
"The points are conveniently placed along with the length of the train so that passengers can remain seated and use them conveniently," an official said. The provision is a useful passenger amenity, particularly for those undertaking long commutes across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. With smartphones now integral to everyday urban life, charging points inside trains can be more than just an added feature - they can be a practical necessity for passengers who may be away from home for several hours.
For the MMRDA, which is developing Line 4, the authority has also focused on other commuter-oriented facilities, including cycling infrastructure. "Such amenities are generally expected to be specified and conveyed to the rolling-stock manufacturer by the procuring authority at the design and procurement stage. Their inclusion depends on the requirements set out in the tender and contract, rather than being left to the manufacturer's discretion alone," a source at a train-manufacturing firm told mid-day.
