Plaster falls from 30-year-old Mumbra building, structure declared dangerous

Plaster fell from a residential and commercial building in Mumbra's Kausa area in Thane district of Maharashtra on Tuesday afternoon, with cracks reported in parts of the building and the remaining structure described as being in a dangerous condition, officials said.

The incident was reported at around 3.57 pm on August 18, 2026, in front of Eden Park in Tanwernagar, Kausa, Mumbra.

According to the Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), the affected building is Nadkar Complex, a ground-plus-four-storey structure that is around 30 years old.

The building falls under the C-3 category, which permits residents to remain in the structure while repairs are carried out, it said.

Following the incident, plaster was found to have fallen from the building. Cracks were also observed in the walls and columns, while the remaining portion of the structure was reported to be in a dangerous condition, the officials said.

Around 100 People Live in Building

The building has 17 residential flats and 14 shops, with around 100 people reportedly living there.

Despite the incident and the reported structural damage, no injuries were reported.

The civic authorities are continuing to assess the situation and determine the necessary safety measures.

Civic teams rushed to the spot

The RDMC said that the engineers from the construction department and staff from the disaster management cell of the Mumbra ward committee reached the site.

A pick-up vehicle was also deployed at the location as part of the response.

The civic teams inspected the building and assessed the condition of the affected structure.

Notice issued for repairs

The Mumbra ward committee has issued a notice directing the building authorities to undertake necessary repairs.

Further action will be taken jointly by the Mumbra ward committee and the construction department, according to the civic authorities.

Officials are expected to monitor the building's condition and take further steps based on the structural assessment.

10 killed in Bhiwandi building collapse

In an another incident, last month, ten people were killed and at least three others injured after a portion of the four-storey Kohinoor building collapsed in Balaji Nagar, Gangaram Wadi, Bhiwandi. Rescue operations by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Thane Disaster Response Force (TDRF), the fire brigade, police, and the Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation continued through Friday, with authorities searching the debris for any remaining victims.

A massive rescue operation was launched soon after the incident. Heavy machinery, including excavators, was deployed to clear the rubble, while rescue personnel carried out manual searches to locate those trapped beneath debris.
