Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis has approved 65 railway infrastructure projects under the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MahaRail) and directed officials to work towards making the state free of railway level crossing, reported the PTI.

Chairing a review meeting of MahaRail on Monday, Fadnavis said the state must focus on developing railway overbridges, underpasses and pedestrian bridges to improve safety and connectivity while reducing traffic congestion.

According to an official statement, the 65 approved projects form the first phase of a larger plan comprising 131 railway-related infrastructure works.

The projects will be undertaken on roads managed by the Public Works Department and Urban Development Department.

The chief minister instructed officials to prioritise locations with high traffic volumes and minimal land acquisition requirements to ensure faster implementation.

Focus on high-traffic railway crossings

Fadnavis said priority should be given to projects located on roads where Train Vehicle Units (TVU) range between 25,000 and one lakh.

TVU is a measure used by Indian Railways to assess traffic density at railway level crossings. It takes into account both train movements and road traffic passing through a crossing within a 24-hour period.

The objective is to eliminate busy level crossings and improve road safety for motorists and pedestrians.

The Maharashtra government has proposed a total of 80 railway infrastructure projects in major urban centres across the state.

Among these:

- 17 projects are planned in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR)

- 15 projects in Pune

- 13 projects in Nagpur

- Five projects each in Nashik and Amravati

- Remaining projects are spread across other cities and towns

The government believes the projects will support growing urban populations and improve transport connectivity.

Planning for future urban growth

The chief minister directed officials to prepare long-term infrastructure plans around railway corridors, particularly in rapidly expanding metropolitan areas.

He also instructed district collectors and municipal commissioners to form local committees to verify project proposals before implementation.

According to officials, the move is aimed at ensuring better coordination between local authorities and MahaRail.

During the meeting, Fadnavis highlighted concerns about potential traffic bottlenecks at junctions connected to newly built flyovers in Nagpur.

He asked authorities to undertake advance planning to prevent future congestion.

The chief minister also directed officials to replace an ageing railway overbridge on the Amravati-Badnera route with a new structure to improve safety and traffic flow.

Funding and administrative reforms

CM Fadnavis instructed officials to explore funding options through the Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO) and identify ways to lower borrowing costs for infrastructure projects.

He also directed that the process of bringing MahaRail under the Public Works Department be accelerated.

In addition, the chief minister emphasised the need for timely payments for completed projects to ensure smooth execution of future works.

Public Works Minister Shivendrasinhraje Bhosale attended the meeting via video conference, while Minister of State Indranil Naik and MLA Prasad Lad were present in person.
