The Central Board declared Std X results last week, with several toppers from Mumbai. However, a striking trend has emerged - many students scoring above 90 per cent are opting for re-examinations. The new provision allows students to improve scores in up to three subjects.

Re-test rush

In BMC schools, 339 students appeared for the exams, with 35 scoring above 90 per cent. Now, in a bid to improve their marks, nearly 64 students are to appear for this re-test from mid-May. As per the principals, Mathematics and English are the most preferred subjects for improvement. Even students in the 80-90 per cent bracket are opting in, aiming to move into the topper category.

Topper's take

City topper Aarya Lamne, who scored 97.80 per cent, is also set to reappear. "I scored slightly lower in Maths, which affected my confidence. As I aspire to be an engineer, I want to improve. It's not just about marks on paper," she said.

Wider trend

On April 15, students from 12 civic schools received CBSE Std X results, compared to just one school last year. Principals believe the trend will grow as students seek better chances at preferred junior colleges.

"I had a class of 30 students who appeared for class 10 boards, of these 12 are to appear for a re-test. Many of these have already scored between 80-90 per cent, but they know that they have the capabilities to go higher," said Shambhunath Gosavi, principal of BMC Mithagar, Mulund school.

Private schools show a similar pattern. At RN Podar School, nearly 30 per cent of students have registered for re-exams. "Students scoring 93-94 in Maths are attempting again for perfect scores. Even those with confirmed Std XI admissions want to improve. They see this as a second opportunity," said Senior Headmistress Suman Samarth.
