Two 18-year-old college students drowned in the Tungareshwar river on Monday while participating in the Kanwar Yatra during the holy month of Shravan. Police said one of them slipped into the river, and the other jumped in to save him. Tragically, both lost their lives.

The deceased have been identified as Sachin Yadav and Himanshu Vishwakarma, both residents of Shriram Nagar in Nalasopara East. Around 200 locals had set out from the area for the Kanwar Yatra at Tungareshwar in Vasai. According to officials, the incident occurred around 2.30 pm as the two youths were participating in the yatra with a group from their locality.

A police officer said, "On the occasion of Shravan, residents had organised a Kanwar Yatra to the Tungareshwar temple in Vasai. A group from Nalasopara had travelled to Mandvi in Virar, and six of them reached the Tungareshwar area."

"While returning, both boys entered the river. One slipped and fell into the water, unintentionally pushing the other in as well. A third youth attempted to rescue them but began to drown. Fortunately, others managed to pull him out. Sadly, Sachin and Himanshu could not be saved," said the officer

Both victims were pulled from the river and taken to Galaxy Hospital, where doctors declared them dead before admission. The Pelhar police have registered an accidental death report and initiated an investigation.
