The Maharashtra Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Committee has invited citizens to submit their suggestions and feedback on the proposed Uniform Civil Code by November 15, 2026. Responses can be submitted through a dedicated web portal, email or post, the committee said on Thursday.
Committee chairperson and former Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Desai launched the special web portal through video-conferencing on Thursday to facilitate public participation in the consultation process.
The public consultation is part of Maharashtra's efforts to prepare a framework for a Uniform Civil Code. The state government had announced plans to set up a committee to draft the proposed legislation, with the panel subsequently formed under Justice Ranjana Desai.
The committee will conduct an in-depth study of the constitutional, legal, social, cultural and administrative aspects of the Uniform Civil Code. It will consider the state's diverse religions, traditions, social structures and cultural characteristics, along with women's rights, gender equality and equal justice for all citizens.
Citizens can submit their suggestions and feedback through the following channels:
Web portal: https://ucc.maharashtra.gov.in/
Email: ucc@maharashtra.gov.in
The committee will study laws, rules, implementation processes, experiences and challenges related to the Uniform Civil Code in other states. It will examine marriage, divorce, inheritance, succession and other personal laws before submitting its recommendations to the Maharashtra government.
It will also assess the potential social, economic, administrative and legal implications of implementing the Uniform Civil Code and recommend necessary legal, administrative and institutional measures.
As part of the consultation process, the committee will seek views from representatives of various religions, legal experts, political and social organisations, voluntary groups, women's organisations, educational institutions, subject experts and members of the general public.
Public consultations and hearings on various aspects of the proposed code will also be organised, according to a press release issued by the committee.
Last month, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the state government plans to introduce legislation on the Uniform Civil Code during the Winter Session of the Maharashtra Assembly in Nagpur.
