Maharashtra Chief Minister (CM) Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday launched 'Bharat Taxi', India's first cooperative-based cab and vehicle service initiative, in the presence of Union Minister of State for Cooperation and Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol.
The mobile application-based service will offer two-wheelers, autorickshaws and four-wheeler cabs. Operating on a cooperative model, Bharat Taxi aims to improve drivers' earnings, enhance transparency and expand access to digital mobility services while strengthening urban transport.
The launch took place at the Navi Mumbai International Airport during a special event, where the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Sahakar Taxi Co-operative Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen last-mile connectivity across Mumbai.
The MoU was exchanged by Abhijit Bangar, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects), BMC, and Colonel Himanshu Singh, Chief Executive Officer of Sahakar Taxi Co-operative Limited.
Under the agreement, BMC and the cooperative will coordinate on transport planning and the use of civic spaces to facilitate seamless last-mile connectivity for commuters travelling to and from railway stations, Metro stations and bus terminals across Mumbai.
The initiative aims to improve urban mobility by integrating cooperative transport services with Mumbai's public transport network. The platform is intended to complement existing public transport by providing on-demand connectivity between Metro stations, railway stations, bus terminals and commuters' final destinations.
State Cooperation Minister Babasaheb Patil, legislators Mahesh Baldi, Prashant Thakur and Manda Mhatre, Cooperation Secretary Pravin Darade, Joint Secretary in the Union Ministry of Cooperation Raman Kumar, Cooperation Commissioner Deepak Taware, Sahakar Taxi Chairman Dr Jayen Mehta, Thane Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao, and other dignitaries were present at the launch event.
Similar partnerships have been signed in other cities to integrate Bharat Taxi with public transport networks. In June, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation signed an MoU with Sahakar Taxi Co-operative Limited to strengthen first- and last-mile connectivity through its Mobility as a Service (MaaS) platform.
According to the Ministry of Cooperation, Bharat Taxi aims to expand its cooperative mobility platform to more than 500 cities and towns across India over the next two years.
