Maharashtra weather update: IMD forecasts thunderstorms in Konkan, heatwave in Vidarbha

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday forecast a mix of heatwave conditions, hot and humid weather, and thunderstorms across several parts of Maharashtra over the next five days, according to its latest district-wise weather bulletin.

Dry weather likely in Mumbai, Palghar

Mumbai, Palghar and several parts of north Maharashtra are expected to witness mainly dry weather conditions till May 20. However, isolated hot and humid conditions are likely in Thane and Raigad districts on Saturday before weather conditions turn dry over the following days.

The Colaba station in Mumbai, which is representative of Mumbai City, recorded a maximum temperature of 34.3 degrees Celsius, while Santacruz, which indicates the temperature in the suburbs, recorded 34.1 degrees Celsius. No rainfall was reported across the state.

Thunderstorm alert for Konkan districts

The IMD has also predicted thunderstorm activity accompanied by lightning, moderate rainfall and gusty winds ranging between 30 and 50 kmph in parts of Konkan, western Maharashtra and Marathwada.

Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts are likely to experience thunderstorms with lightning and moderate rainfall over the next two days, followed by light to moderate rain and thundershowers till May 20.

On Saturday, Ratnagiri recorded a maximum temperature of 34.1 degrees Celsius.

Gusty winds, rain forecast in western Maharashtra

Districts including Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli and Solapur have also been placed under thunderstorm alert with the possibility of gusty winds reaching 40 to 50 kmph at isolated places.

Pune, Ahilyanagar and the ghat regions of Pune are likely to receive light to moderate rain and thundershowers between May 16 and May 18.

Pune's Shivajinagar weather station recorded 39.2 degrees Celsius on Saturday (2.3 degrees Celsius above normal).

On Sunday, Pune is likely to see the clear sky becoming partly cloudy towards afternoon or evening, with the maximum and minimum temperatures likely to be around 38 degrees Celsius and 24 degrees Celsius respectively.

Marathwada districts likely to receive thunderstorms

In Marathwada, districts such as Beed, Nanded, Latur and Dharashiv are expected to witness thunderstorms, lightning and moderate rainfall over the next three days. IMD has advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorm activity and avoid taking shelter under trees or near electrical structures.

On Saturday, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar recorded 41.6 degrees Celsius while in Parbhani, the mercury reached 44 degrees Celsius.

Heatwave conditions to continue in Vidarbha

Meanwhile, heatwave conditions are likely to persist at isolated places in Vidarbha districts, including Akola, Amravati, Nagpur and Wardha till May 20.

The highest maximum temperature in Maharashtra was 46.0 degrees Celsius recorded at Amravati and Wardha.

The IMD has advised people to avoid prolonged heat exposure, stay hydrated and take precautions while venturing outdoors during peak afternoon hours.

Advisory issued for farmers

The weather department has also issued advisories for farmers, asking them to complete harvesting of mature crops and store produce safely due to the possibility of unseasonal rainfall and gusty winds in several districts.
