Jayshree Nesarikar, widow of late Chief Fire Officer Sunil Nesarikar, met Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta on Friday afternoon to request the civic body to allow her family to stay on in the official quarters allotted to her deceased husband. The family has been staying at the Irla Fire Station quarters in Andheri.

"I have to humbly request your respected self with folded hands to kindly allow us to stay in the present quarters for a further period of three years without payment of any rent till my son completes his graduation," said the letter submitted by Jayshree to Mehta, during the visit.

Nesarikar had succumbed to his injuries from the Kalbadevi blaze on May 24. After four days of the tragedy, the fire brigade department had issued a 16-point checklist to the family, which asked for details needed for issuing pension and allied benefits to the deceased.

Among other details, the 16-point checklist wanted Nesarikar's family to confirm as to when would they be vacating the fire brigade's quarters at Irla. The Nesarikar family then fixed a formal appointment with the municipal commissioner and Jayshree met him for around 15 minutes yesterday.

During the meeting, she requested Mehta to let them stay on at the fire brigade quarters at Irla for three more years. In the letter, Jayshree has said that she wants this additional time for the family as her son Siddhant, a second-year engineering student, would take three years more to complete his education.

Siddhant is studying at Mukesh Patel School of Technology, Management and Engineering in Vile Parle (West). Jayshree stays at the Irla quarters with Siddhant and Sunanda, mother of the deceased fire chief.

No financial support
Jayshree has mentioned in the letter that she was aware of the standard procedure that asks the family to vacate the official residence within 90 days, but the sudden and tragic death of her husband had left the family shattered and without any financial support.

She has added that she would have to find employment or other means of earning, while also looking after her old and sick mother-in-law, and to enable Siddhant to complete his education.

Jayshree has also asked the municipal commissioner for a job assurance for her son Siddhant after his education, so that he could become an earning member of the family after completing his studies.
