A 16-year-old boy lost his life after drowning at Juhu Chowpatty near the JW Marriott Hotel in Juhu West on Friday evening, officials said.
According to preliminary information, the incident was reported to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) at around 7:31 pm. Following the alert, rescue teams from the fire brigade, along with lifeguards, local police personnel, and a 108 ambulance service, rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation.
The victim, identified as Sarfaraz Khan, was pulled out of the water by the BMC fire brigade personnel and lifeguards. He was immediately shifted to Cooper Hospital for medical treatment.
However, upon reaching the hospital, doctors declared the teenager "brought dead." While the exact circumstances leading to the drowning are yet to be ascertained. Police have initiated further investigation into the incident and are carrying out the necessary legal formalities.
The tragedy has once again highlighted the dangers of venturing into the sea, particularly during the monsoon season, when rough tides and unpredictable currents pose significant risks to beachgoers. Authorities have repeatedly urged citizens to exercise caution and adhere to safety advisories while visiting Mumbai's beaches.
