A 19-year-old second-year chemical engineering student was found dead in his hostel room at the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) in Matunga, Mumbai, police said.
The student, who hailed from Maharashtra's Nashik, was alone in his room when he was found dead, according to the police.
The student's family contacted his friends and asked them to check on him. When they reached his accommodation, they found him dead, officials said.
The incident was reported to the police at around 11 pm on Tuesday.
"An accidental death report (ADR) has been registered in the matter and a probe was underway," said an official.
Police said that a post-mortem examination had been conducted and the student's parents had been informed.
ICT Vice-Chancellor Prof Aniruddha B Pandit said students have access to counselling services on campus around the clock.
"The ICT has a full-time counsellor and a professor who has the necessary qualifications for counselling. Students who seek help are checked up on and even undergo a psychometric check," Pandit said.
He added that the student had not sought assistance from the institute's counsellors during his time on campus and had been consulting his own doctor since 2023.
