Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport's Terminal 1 will, from October 25, slowly start cutting down operations for a much-needed redevelopment. The terminal is one of the oldest standing buildings at the airport.
Currently, according to the information received by mid-day, the airport is not shutting down all operations at T1 at once. The shutdown will happen in a phased manner, with a third of the operations shut first, followed by two-thirds of the operations, and then the final operations by January next year.
Airlines that operate out of Terminal 1 are now in the decision-making process of shifting their operations to available slots at T2, while others have been given the option of shifting to Navi Mumbai International Airport.
Passengers who already have tickets booked for after October 25 will be updated by the airlines concerned about any changes in the terminal or airport.
The airport operator, Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL)
"Terminal 1 is scheduled for demolition and reconstruction in line with AERA's tariff order. The work, originally planned for mid-2025, was deferred as there was no alternative operating facility for airlines. With Navi Mumbai International Airport [NMIAL] now operational, airlines have an alternative option within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The redevelopment will start in January 2027. Airlines may shift operations to NMIAL or temporarily suspend them from October 25 until the new Terminal 1 is commissioned in 2029-30. Mumbai International Airport Limited [MIAL] will honour airlines' historic slot rights once the new terminal becomes operational."
