The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday, July 13, has announced that the newly constructed Accident and Emergency Medical Services Complex at the civic-run B.Y.L. Nair Charitable Hospital in Mumbai Central is now operational.
Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde, along with Leader of Opposition Kishori Pednekar, Samajwadi Party Group Leader, corporator Amrin Abrhani, and other senior officials, inspected the new facility before emergency services were formally made operational.
As per the official statement from the BMC, the formal inauguration ceremony was cancelled on July 13 following the Centre's declaration of a one-day national mourning after the demise of former Qatar Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani on July 12. Officials also paid tribute to the late leader before the inspection.
According to the BMC, the state-of-the-art Casualty and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) department has been developed in accordance with the Minimum Standard Requirements prescribed by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
As per BMC, the project forms a key component of Nair Hospital's ongoing expansion under its Prime Projects Development programme. The larger redevelopment plan also includes a dedicated oncology building, Resident Medical Officer (RMO) quarters, and an L-shaped hospital building.
Officials further said that the integration of a 24x7 casualty department with advanced emergency medical services is aimed at ensuring faster response times and improved quality of treatment for critically ill and accident victims.
Following completion of construction and receipt of all statutory No Objection Certificates (NOCs), the facility was handed over to the hospital administration on June 25, 2026.
The existing casualty building will now be demolished to facilitate the construction of a 20-floor residential complex for Resident Medical Officers (RMOs).
To ensure patient safety and smooth functioning, the fully centrally air-conditioned complex will become operational in two phases.
The following services have commenced immediately:
The second phase will include advanced emergency diagnostic and investigative services, which will be introduced shortly.
The newly developed emergency complex has been designed across two floors to streamline patient assessment, treatment and hospital administration.
As per BMC, the ground floor has been planned for rapid evaluation and stabilisation of emergency patients and includes:
