Commuters travelling between the east and west ends of South Mumbai will soon find relief, as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to open the Carnac Bridge after June 15. The civic body on Tuesday announced that construction of the bridge was completed the same day, meeting its committed deadline of June 10.
The bridge is a key connector in South Mumbai, linking the high-traffic areas of P D'Mello Road and Masjid Bunder. It will also ease congestion near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Mohammad Ali Road. The travel time, which currently takes up to 30 to 40 minutes, is expected to reduce to just five to seven minutes. Originally built in 1868, the bridge was demolished in August 2022 after being declared unsafe for use.

Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar told mid-day, "As committed in November 2024, we have completed all work on the Carnac Bridge. We now require time until June 15 to conduct the mandatory load test and a site visit by an expert. During this period, BMC will also complete finishing works such as lane marking, street lighting, painting, and signage installation."
The load test is scheduled for Friday, June 13, and will take 48 hours to complete. Following this, a professor from the Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) will conduct a site inspection. The bridge is expected to be ready for inauguration by June 15. The traffic police will be consulted before opening the bridge to the public, BMC stated on Tuesday. The Carnac Bridge measures 328 metres in length, with 70 metres falling within railway premises.
Construction highlights
During construction, two girders, each 70 metres long, 26.5 metres wide, and weighing 550 metric tonnes, were installed using reinforced concrete. Installation was completed in October 2024 and January 2025. The girders were assembled at a height of 8 to 9 metres above ground level. Work near the railway tracks included the installation of noise and anti-crash barriers.
