The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), while issuing an official statement on October 24, said that a case has been registered at Dharavi Police Station against a person for allegedly filing 24 applications seeking claims and objections to the draft electoral roll in a single day.
The civic body also said that he was filing applications despite exceeding the prescribed limit under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR)-2026 programme.
As per the officials, the complaint was filed against Giridhari Swaminath Jaiswal, a resident of Gangadharlal Chawl on 90 Feet Road in Dharavi East, falling under the 178-Dharavi Assembly constituency.
BMC also said that Jaiswal had submitted 24 Form 7 applications in one day, violating the prescribed limit of 10 such applications per person per day under the directions of the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the Chief Electoral Officer of Maharashtra.
The BMC said a complaint had been lodged against Jaiswal under Section 31 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, over allegations of submitting Form 7 applications containing false and incorrect information in violation of the prescribed rules.
Under the provisions outlined by the civic body, action can be initiated against an objector if it is established that false information or a false declaration was intentionally provided in Form 7.
Form 7 is used to seek the deletion of a name from the electoral roll on specified grounds, including objections to an entry or claims of death, shifting or duplication, subject to the applicable electoral rules.
An official statement from the BMC also noted, "Special Intensive Revision of Voters' Lists (SIR)-2026 was being implemented across the Brihanmumbai area in accordance with the ECI's directions."
Draft electoral rolls for all Assembly constituencies were published on August 31, 2026. The period for submitting claims and objections was fixed from August 31 to October 26, 2026.
The civic body said the daily cap of 10 Form 7 applications had been prescribed under the directions of the election authorities to regulate the process.
The case in Dharavi comes just days before the October 26 deadline for submitting claims and objections to the draft electoral rolls.
Further details regarding the police investigation and any subsequent action in the case are awaited.
