Mumbai civic body issues notice to National Sports Club of India for fire safety violations

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a notice to the National Sports Club of India (NSCI), located on Lala Lajpat Rai Road in Worli, over alleged violations of fire safety norms under Section 5(1) of the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Act, 2006. The notice, issued on December 20, follows inspections carried out by the Mumbai Fire Brigade at the NSCI premises on December 19.

The notice, a copy of which is with mid-day.com, stated: "The following deviations from or contraventions of the requirements with regard to fire prevention and life safety measures, or inadequacies or non-compliances of such measures with reference to the height of the building or the nature of activities carried on in such building or premises or part thereof, have been reported."

BMC directs NSCI to rectify fire safety lapses and submit compliance report

The discrepancies listed include:

Diesel-operated pumps found not in working condition

Water curtain in the basement found not on auto mode

Scrap material found stored in service ducts and passages

Electric cable ducts not sealed at floor level

Leakage found in hoses

Form B certifying the proper functioning of the firefighting system of the administrative building not submitted

The BMC has given NSCI 30 days to rectify the violations and has asked the club to submit Form B within seven days. NSCI has also been directed to submit a compliance report thereafter.

The NSCI premises were used by the Mumbai civic body during the Covid-19 pandemic to operate a jumbo Covid care centre.
