A 30-year-old man was yesterday convicted by a Sessions Court, for raping a 30-year-old mentally challenged woman in her home at Chembur in 2014.

Judge Shayana V Patil sentenced Shahbaz Abdul Shahid Khan to 10 years rigorous imprisonment, and a fine of Rs 5,000 under Sections 376 (rape), 452 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint), and 506 (2) (criminal intimidation) of the IPC.

The case dates back to October 25, 2014, when Khan was passing by the woman's house around 11 pm. Noticing that the door was ajar and nobody was home, Khan let himself in.
According to an officer attached with Tilak Nagar police station, "Khan saw that she was alone at home. He sneaked in and started undressing the woman."
Khan is a married man and stays in the same neighbourhood. Ten minutes later, the parents of the woman returned home from a function they had gone to attend.

When they switched on the lights, they found Khan and their daughter in the nude.
"When the father confronted the accused, Khan pushed him aside and fled from the house," another official of the police station added.
The parents, along with the woman, who is unmarried, reported the matter to the Tilak Nagar police station. A team was formed soon, which dispatched and they managed to nab Khan from Chembur.
