Mumbai crime: Mother's colleague nabbed for Kandivli 5-year-old's rape

More than 10 days after a sleeping five-year-old girl was dragged off the footpath and raped in Kandivli, police have arrested a 25-year-old for the crime.

On August 22, mid-day had reported (‘Man rapes 5-year-old girl after failing to rape her mother') how a drug addict had attacked the five-year-old when she was sleeping next to her mother on the footpath in Kandivli's Saibaba Nagar. A few days before that, the accused had allegedly tried to rape the survivor's mother as well.

According to police officials, the accused has been identified as Ali Mohammad Sheikh (25), a resident of Samta Nagar in Kandivli (East). Sheikh works as a dishwasher and cleaner at the same catering firm which employs the survivor's mother, and he had proposed to her several times, but was turned down. Ali was brought in for questioning by Kandivli police on Saturday and he confessed to the crime on Sunday night. The police formally arrested him after that.

Senior inspector Mahipati Pandharmise of the Kandivli police said, "We suspected Ali as he had worked with the victim's mother at the same catering firm for 10 years. We brought him in for questioning and he confessed to his crime after sustained interrogation. He was produced in court has been remanded in police custody till September 7."

Officials said the survivor is recovering well and is regaining her health.
