Crime Branch seizes 558 litres of adulterated milk, two accused arrested (Pic/Special arrangement)
The Mumbai Crime Branch on Wednesday, July 15, arrested two accused for allegedly adulterating branded milk by mixing contaminated water into sealed packets of Amul and Gokul milk before supplying them to consumers in Goregaon West.
Acting on a tip-off, officers from Crime Branch Unit 11, along with officials from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), conducted a raid at two rooms in Ankur Building near Siddhivinayak Seva Mandal in Prem Nagar, Link Road.
According to police, the accused allegedly cut open original milk packets, removed a portion of the milk, mixed contaminated water unfit for human consumption, and resealed the packets using a heated stove pin and candle wax to make them appear factory-sealed before selling them as genuine branded milk.
During the operation, officials seized 558 litres of adulterated Amul and Gokul milk valued at Rs 39,504. They also recovered 224 empty Amul Gold and Amul Taaza milk packets, adulteration equipment, and a mobile phone. The total value of the seized material is Rs 50,304.
Police said the adulterated milk was destroyed on the spot to prevent it from reaching consumers. The arrested accused have been identified as Krishna Venkayya Lingampally (48) and Ravi Kanahya Patipaka.
Following the operation, a case has been registered at the Goregaon police station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Food Safety and Standards Act. Crime Branch Unit 11 is conducting further investigations to ascertain the scale of the adulteration racket and whether the accused had been supplying the tampered milk to a wider network of vendors or consumers.
Recently, the FDA had also suspended the licenses of Mumbai's iconic Noor Mohammadi, Shalimar, and Rahmania restaurants over alleged hygiene lapses.
Furthermore, the FDA has launched a major statewide enforcement drive against food safety violations, seizing food items and related materials worth Rs 1.68 crore during inspections conducted on July 13, an official statement said on Tuesday.
The action covered milk and dairy products and banned tobacco-based food items, restaurants, hotels, and other food establishments across Maharashtra.
The FDA carried out eight major raids and inspected 32 hotels, restaurants, and eateries, issuing improvement notices to eight establishments and suspending licenses of four food businesses.
