Mumbai has now exceeded the annual average rainfall expected during the seasonal monsoon, with the Santacruz weather station recording 101.49 per cent of the monsoon average, with 2353.6 mm of rain recorded until September 13 against the seasonal average of 2319 mm.
The Colaba weather station has recorded 88.40 per cent of the annual average, with 1851.9 mm of rain so far against its seasonal average of 2095 mm. Until the same day last year, Santacruz had recorded 2625.9 mm of rain (113.23 per cent), and Colaba recorded 1700.2 mm (81.16 per cent).
After a weak spell of rain in September until Saturday morning, in the subsequent 24 hours alone, Santacruz recorded 78.7 mm of rain, while Colaba recorded 40.8 mm until Sunday morning. In contrast, between August 31 and September 12, Santacruz recorded 51 mm of rain, while Colaba received 29.1 mm.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had on Saturday sounded a yellow alert for Mumbai for Saturday and Sunday, indicating light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning, and gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph. However, on Sunday, IMD upgraded this to an orange alert, indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places. For the rest of the week between Monday and Thursday, IMD has indicated a green alert.
During the first half of Sunday (between 10 am and 1 pm), BKC in the western suburbs received the highest rainfall at 147.6 mm, followed by Borivli (138 mm), and Bandra (135.6 mm). In the Eastern suburbs, Chembur received 135.6 mm of rain.
