Father of Sam

It won't be an understatement to call William Dalrymple the reigning superstar of the literary festival circuit. And yet, the venerable historian seems to take some delight in the rise of his son, Sam Dalrymple, on the same circuit.

At his opening session with poet Tashi Chophel at the inaugural day of the Sikkim Arts and Literature Festival, William crossed the session time quite delightfully recollecting his adventures as a 21- year-old getting arrested multiple times on the Golden Road, while following Marco Polo's journey.

When this diarist caught up with Dalrymple senior later, we had to mention a conversation with Sam earlier this year.

"Oh, these days I am known as the Father of Sam," the historian laughed, adding, "I am Abu el Sammy, as the Arabs would call me. And I am delighted about it." It certainly runs in the family.

A familial calendar ode

There are two very special reasons this diarist is taking a closer look at photographs from the newly-unveiled Pirelli Calendar 2027. While we were already excited about the calendar taking on an India-centric theme, ‘The Cal' tugged at our heartstrings, thanks to Avani Rai's tribute to her late father, Raghu Rai.

Originally commissioned to Norwegian photographer Sølve Sundsbø, and the legendary Raghu Rai, the project saw Avani rise to the occasion following her father's passing in April this year. The theme for the year is India: Beyond a Single Gaze, and if we know a thing about the Rais, it's right up their alley. Photographs from the calendar can be viewed at pirellicalendar.pirelli.com.

An electric makeover

Old wires and electronic scraps have found a new life as a chameleon sculpture displayed at Nehru Science Centre.

Now in its sixth year, the Ministry of Culture's cleanliness campaign promotes up-cycling through creative reuse.

"We want people to see waste as a resource and turn creativity into a livelihood," its director Subha Sankar Ghosh, told this diarist.
