Music filled the Chembur air on Saturday as 56 young nadaswaram and thavil artistes marched from Sion to Shanmukhananda Hall honouring doyen TN Rajarathinam Pillai on his 128th birth anniversary. The sabha presented fellowships to the young artistes, while veteran Nadaswara Vidhwan Thiruppamburam TKS Meenakshi Sundaram received a Lifetime Achievement Award.

In September last year, this newspaper had written about researcher-and-artist-couple Kadambari Koli-Tandel and Parag Tandel's Koli Bhasha Sangraha dictionary. Now, the couple are ready to launch a new and upgraded edition of the project on Koli Language Day that falls on September 1.

"The new edition is equipped with new terms, words, and conversations, such as those between two fisherwomen, to help people grasp the language better. Parag has also contributed with new artwork, making it a little non-anthropomorphic this time," Kadambari Koli-Tandel told this diarist.

Not all dastaangois have to be grandiose. Ask theatremaker Danish Husain who led Prasshanth and Devendra Singh Khushwah in a qissebaazi of satirist Patras Bukhari's Qissa Bicycle Khatar Patar Ka on Sunday. "It is an adaptation of Bukhari's Marhoom Ki Yaad Main, and they performed it with such nuance and humour," Husain recalled.

There's good news for the city's art aficionados as it readies to welcome its annual dose of art with ART MUMBAI back for its fourth edition scheduled between November 12 to 15. This time, 94 exhibitors will bring their works, with 73 Indian and 21 international galleries in the mix. Making their debut will be Rajiv Menon Contemporary, Perrotin, Richard Saltoun, Night Gallery, Rizq Art Gallery and Niru Ratnam, while Lisson Gallery and Galleria Continua return.
Other than that, 62 galleries, including Experimenter, Chemould Prescott Road, DAG, and Vadehra Art Gallery, will be back, joined by newcomers Gallery Maskara, Phillips Antiques, Pristine Contemporary, Muziris Contemporary, Kumar Gallery and Gallery Veda, among others. Co-founders Minal Vazirani, Dinesh Vazirani (left), Nakul Dev Chawla and Conor Macklin shared, "At its heart, ART MUMBAI is where collections take shape, be it for discovering artists or adding to collections nurtured over the years."
