Mumbai: Fake BMC officials held for extorting shopkeeper in Jogeshwari

Jogeshwari police have arrested two fraudsters who posed as BMC officials and attempted to extort Rs 5000 from a shopkeeper under the pretext of inspecting fire safety equipment.

According to police, the complainant, Chirag Kantariya, 39, runs a garment shop on lease in Jogeshwari East. On September 11, two men approached him at the shop, said they were BMC staff, showed him identity cards and asked to see the fire extinguisher.

They claimed it was empty, and demanded a fine of Rs 5000. When Kantariya called the BMC to verify, the duo tried to flee but was caught by the building's security guard, Umesh Mandal. Jogeshwari police have registered a case against them.
