Two parked motorcycles were damaged after falling into a large ditch after a section of a footpath collapsed in Mumbai's Nahur on Sunday morning, officials said.
The incident reportedly took place next to a local corporator's office in the ward.
Fortunately, the collapse happened early in the morning when there were very few pedestrians in the area, preventing any injuries.
Local resident Madhu Kotian said the incident could have resulted in a serious tragedy had it occurred during busy hours.
He pointed out that a large stormwater drain runs beneath the footpath and questioned how the structure had been constructed over it.
Kotian asked whether a proper structural assessment had been carried out before the footpath was built, who approved the project, and whether regular safety inspections and maintenance had been undertaken.
Kotian also called for a detailed inquiry into the incident.
He said the ward has been represented by the same corporator for four consecutive terms and argued that residents deserve answers about how the collapse occurred and who should be held responsible.
He further urged civic authorities to inspect other footpaths built over stormwater drains across the city to ensure they do not pose similar risks to public safety.
Officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) visited the site after the collapse, sources said.
According to civic officials, the damaged section will be repaired within one or two days, and the footpath will be restored once the work is completed.
The officials have not reported any injuries, and the two motorcycles were the only property affected by the incident.
