Four people, including two children, suffered burn injuries after an LPG cylinder caught fire inside a room in Dharavi early Sunday, September 6. The fire was reported from a ground-plus-two-storey structure on Sion-Dharavi Link Road in Rajiv Gandhi Nagar, near Rajiv Gandhi Sports Club.
According to the Mumbai Fire Brigade, the fire was confined to a Bharat Gas LPG cylinder inside Room No. 43 of the building. Residents managed to extinguish the flames before fire brigade personnel arrived at the spot.
The incident was reported at around 1.39 am, while the fire had already been brought under control by 12.10 am, officials said.
Four people sustained burn injuries in the incident and were taken to Sion Hospital in a police vehicle before the fire brigade reached the location.
According to Dr Chaitanya, the attending medical officer at Sion Hospital, 30-year-old Poonam Jaiswal suffered 30 per cent burns. Rohan Gupta, aged five, sustained 5 per cent burns, while four-year-old Rudra Gupta suffered 8 per cent burns. Parvati Gandhari, 19, sustained 15 per cent burns.
All four injured persons were admitted to Sion Hospital for treatment.
The Mumbai Fire Brigade, police and BEST personnel were mobilised following the incident. Fire brigade officials confirmed that the flames had been extinguished and that the fire did not spread beyond the LPG cylinder.
The circumstances that led to the cylinder catching fire are yet to be ascertained. Further details are awaited.
In a separate incident, a fire broke out at Saraswati Bhavan on Lamington Road in Mumbai late Saturday night, with the blaze confined to a ground-floor godown of a ground-plus-one-storey building, according to the Mumbai Fire Brigade.
The incident was reported at around 11.33 pm on September 5. The fire was confined to the godown on the ground floor of the G+1 structure.
The Mumbai Fire Brigade initially classified the incident as a Level-I fire at around 11.49 pm. The response was subsequently escalated to Level-II at around 12.40 am on September 6.
Fire brigade personnel, police officials, an emergency ambulance service and ward staff were mobilised to the site to respond to the incident.
The fire was contained to the godown, and no injuries were reported in the incident.
