As many as 25,231 idols were immersed in Mumbai by 6 pm on Tuesday, during the first immersion day of the 12-day Ganeshotsav 2026 celebrations that began a day earlier, officials said.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has made arrangements at immersion sites across the city, including artificial ponds and major natural immersion locations, to facilitate devotees and manage the expected crowds during the festival.
According to figures shared by BMC officials, 24,521 household Ganesh idols were immersed till 9 pm on Tuesday.
Around 110 idols belonging to public Ganesh mandals were also immersed, while 600 Hartalika idols were included in the total.
The breakup of immersions recorded until 9 pm was:
- Sarvjanik Ganesh idols: 110
- Gharguti Ganesh idols: 24,521
- Hartalika idols: 600
- Total: 25,231
Civic authorities said no untoward incident had been reported during the immersions.
The early immersions took place at designated locations across Mumbai as devotees carried out processions to mark the conclusion of their celebrations.
The BMC and Mumbai Police have made arrangements at immersion points and along procession routes to manage crowds, traffic and the movement of devotees.
Ganesh idols are immersed on different days depending on local and family traditions. While some devotees immerse idols after one-and-a-half days, others follow five-day, seven-day or longer immersion schedules.
The first immersion day is among the initial major immersion periods of Ganeshotsav in Mumbai, with larger numbers expected on subsequent days.
The festival is being celebrated across the city with devotees bringing idols into homes and public mandals for prayers and cultural programmes.
The 12-day festival will culminate on Anant Chaturdashi, which falls on September 25 this year. On the final immersion day, large numbers of devotees are expected to take part in processions before immersing the idols in water bodies and designated immersion facilities.
The BMC has been preparing for the festival by making arrangements at artificial ponds and natural immersion points, while civic and police personnel have been deployed to manage crowds and traffic.
More immersions expected in coming days
The number of immersions is expected to rise as devotees observing different durations complete their Ganeshotsav celebrations.
