Mumbai: Illegal sixth-floor structure collapses in MHADA building, one injured

A portion of the sixth floor of the Lokhandwala Building, a MHADA cessed property at Vithaldas Chandan Street in Masjid Bunder, collapsed onto the fifth floor on Saturday afternoon, injuring one person and triggering a swift rescue operation by multiple emergency agencies.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the incident was reported at 12.34 pm. A section of the sixth floor gave way and crashed onto the floor below while six occupants were inside the building.

"The sixth floor was illegally constructed like the upper floor of a duplex house. So, the slab of sixth floor along with the stairs, that were constructed from the interior of fifth floor's house, collapsed. Umed Khan, who was injured, got six stitches on his head. We were lucky enough to not get injured. The fire department and BMC emptied the building and so we have left for our native place in Satara as we do not have any other option. Even the authorities haven't provided any alternative temporary accommodation," said Anand Gole.
